What NOT to Wear to a Job Interview

Recently, a post gained attention on the platform TikTok. The creator was confused as to why they had been asked to reschedule due to showing up for an interview wearing shorts. Although the shorts were black and paired with a nice top, the interviewer did not deem them appropriate interview attire. This upset the job seeker. Commenters largely agreed that shorts in any form were inappropriate for a job interview. So, what items should one never consider appropriate for a job interview? Read on to find out what clothing should never be worn to an interview.

Open toe shoes

Although you may have a nice pair of sandals or open toe heels, these should be reserved for after you have the job if company dress code allows. Play it safe and wear closed toe dress shoes.

Jeans

In some workplaces, dark colored jeans or nicer jeans are allowed, but you should never assume jeans are appropriate for an interview. Stick with dress slacks for interviews, since you are still a potential hire and want to demonstrate a professional demeanor.

Graphic shirts

Shirts with writing or pictures should be avoided. Stick with a solid color or pinstripe top.

Caps

Caps or hats should not be worn to a job interview, no matter how casual the workplace.

Sleeveless tops

sleeveless top shouldn’t be worn alone. A sleeveless top can work under a blazer but never as a stand alone piece. Also, make sure whatever top you wear with your suit is not too low cut. A button-up shirt in a solid color is always a safe bet.

Shorts or short skirts

No matter how you dress them, shorts don’t belong in a job interview. Skirts shouldn’t come above mid thigh. Keep skirts at the knee to be safe. Pants or pencil skirts in black, grey or navy are the safest options.

Sleepwear

Anything that could be classified as sleepwear or loungewear shouldn’t be worn to job interviews. That includes leggings, loose t-shirts or sheer tops and pants.

Stained clothing

Before your interview, do a thorough inspection of you interview wardrobe to see if there are stains. You may need to have certain pieces dry cleaned, so check your interview outfit at least several days before you have to wear them.

Heavy perfumes or cologne

Good hygiene and grooming are crucial when interviewing. Brush and floss your teeth, take a shower, and brush your hair. Keep nails short and clean. Clothing should be clean and free of odors such as smoke or heavy fragrance. If you wish to wear perfume or cologne, choose something lighter and don’t use more than a couple of sprays.

Many workplaces have become more casual about dress codes, but you always want to put your best foot forward during the interview. There may be rare exceptions to these rules, such as entertainment industry jobs where one is expected to dress a part. But it’s always better to be overdressed for an interview than underdressed.
