Highly Sensitive Persons: Self-Care Tips for Stressful Times

Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP’s) can become easily overwhelmed by day-to-day activities. According to psychologist Elaine Aron who coined the term, HSP’s may be sensitive to loud noises, bright lights, and busy environments. If you’re easily bothered by things that don’t seem to affect others and you’ve often been told that you’re “too sensitive”, you may be an HSP. Being a Highly Sensitive Person isn’t a disability, but it can be hard in today’s fast-paced, constantly connected world. Read on for some HSP self-care tips for stressful times.

Establish Routines

Routines are very important for HSP’s. Having an organized schedule minimizes stress and worry because you know what to expect and when to expect it. Don’t choose more than two scheduling methods (paper planner, smartphone app, online calendar, etc) or you’ll be overwhelmed with something that’s supposed to make things easier.

Find a Creative Outlet

An outlet for stress is important for everyone, but especially for HSP’s. Highly sensitive people tend to overthink things and too much unoccupied time can cause unnecessary worrying. Creative outlets allow you to focus on the activity at hand and forget problems. It doesn’t have to be elaborate – something as simple as adult coloring books will work.

Know Your Limits and Set Boundaries

Over-stimulation is a common problem for HSP’s. It’s important that you are aware of what you can and can’t handle. Don’t take on too much at once and set boundaries with other people. Doing too much can make you tired, irritable and stressed. If you feel guilty saying no, just explain that you’re tired and need a break or that you get easily overwhelmed by certain situations. There’s no need to explain being an HSP, just a simple statement will do.

Journaling

Writing in a journal isn’t just for teenagers. Recording your thoughts, worries, and ideas can be very cathartic. Don’t put pressure on yourself to write everyday or to keep things neat. Write what you want, when you want. A handwritten journal is best, but type it out if that’s easier for you.

Being a Highly Sensitive Person isn’t unusual or abnormal. According to the The Highly Sensitive Person, approximately 15 to 20 percent of the population are HSP’s. You may not be understood by the majority of people around you, but you’re far from alone.
