As an entering college freshman, it can be hard to predict what you’ll need and what will be a waste of money. Some things are obvious, but others you might not think to bring. Being prepared, both in your dorm and for classes, will relieve the stress of your first semester as a college student. Some back-to-school items to add to your shopping list:
Dorm Room Essentials
Fans and Space Heaters
Dorm rooms can be uncomfortably hot or cold. And since you often can’t control the thermostat, it’s important to have a fan or space heater to help keep your room comfortable. A small desk fan or space heater can fit anywhere in your room and be easily stored away when not in use.
Hanging Storage
Hanging storage, such as over the door shoe organizers, gives you additional storage for shoes, jewelry, toiletries, and other small items. It’s a great way to keep your closet and dorm room organized, while having items you regularly use within easy reach.
Ultra Thin Hangers
Maximize space in your small dorm closet by using ultra-thin hangers. You can fit much more clothing than with traditional hangers and most are no-slip so you will not only have more space, but a more organized and tidy closet.
Shower Caddy
A shower caddy is an important part of dorm living if you share a bathroom with several other students. Since you aren’t able to store your toiletries in the bathroom, you need a sturdy, well designed container to carry them back and forth. Ideally, your shower caddy will have holes or mesh material for quick drying. Also be sure it has plenty of pockets or sections to hold all the items you use on a daily basis.

Classroom Essentials
Planner
A planner can help you stay on track with your studying, assignments, exams and extracurricular activities. Although there are electronic planners, many still prefer paper planners.
Laptop Backpack
A sturdy, durable backpack that also holds your laptop is essential for college. Quality laptop backpacks don’t have to be expensive – just do your research before buying.
USB Drives
Backup and transfer your digital content with USB storage. USB drives are small and easy to transport, plus they don’t cost a lot of money. Pick up several before you start classes so you’ll never run out of external storage.
Post It Flags
Post it flags provide an easy way to mark a page in your textbook without damaging the book. They’re easy to put on and remove, plus easier to see than a folded page corner.
Sheet Protectors
Keep your important notes and reports free of stains and dirt with sheet protectors. It’s probably not something you think you need, but you’ll be glad you have them.
Composition Notebooks
Many classes require composition notebooks for tests or essays. Keep a good supply on hand so you don’t have any last minute pre-exam panics.
