Re-posted from InternshipsOnly.com

Unpaid internships are the norm in many industries. Students fetch coffee and make copies hoping to gain a little valuable experience or make connections. But how do you decide which unpaid internships are worth the effort? A few tips to keep in mind when assessing an unpaid internship:

Company Reputation

More reputable companies often offer better internship opportunities, because they have more resources to devote to formal internship programs that provide quality training. Another huge advantage: having a well-know company listed on your resume.

Job Duties

A good internship program will have clear responsibilities and goals outlined for interns in advance. Will your responsibilities include working with experienced professionals in your field? What skills can you gain, based on the job duties described? What will a typical day be like at work during your internship? These questions should be asked before deciding to take on an unpaid internship.

Success of Former Interns

What happens to former interns? Do many get hired on with the same company? For some companies, entry level positions are filled mostly with former interns. Other companies take advantage of free labor with no intention of hiring interns. Talk to former interns with the company or look for online employer reviews.

Hours/Length of Internship

A small (lucky) percentage of students can work indefinitely at an unpaid internship. However, most students and recent graduates have bills and loans to pay. A full-time internship lasting a year should provide some compensation, while an unpaid part-time internship lasting only a few months isn’t unreasonable. Determine how long you can afford to work without payment, and when choosing an internship, make sure any unpaid work will be beneficial to your future career.

Class Credit/Perks

Although a company might not pay cash to interns, it may offer other forms of compensation such as class credit, meal or travel stipends, or free housing. An internship abroad could offer travel and cultural opportunities that you’ll never have again.

Industry Norms

Paid internships are almost unheard-of in some fields. If jobs in your industry require internship experience, an unpaid internship may be worth it. Few companies are willing to train new graduates without some experience. Usually, employers count internships as work experience.

Employers have come to expect internship experience from recent graduates. This puts pressure on students to take an internship-any internship-just to have it on their resumes. Some organizations take advantage of the increasing popularity of internships by offering unpaid positions. Before working without pay, weight the current costs and potential benefits to your career.

In a job market that is increasingly competitive, gaining additional experience can be key when it comes time to look for a job. Internships can be a great way to do just that, letting young grads and students see what the working world will be like before they enter it themselves. Unfortunately, some of the internships that offer the best experience don’t come with much, if any, of a paycheck. That doesn’t mean they can’t pay off in the long run, but they will require some sacrifices to make them work in the present. If you’re debating whether or not to apply for an unpaid internship as a student or a grad, don’t be afraid to make the leap– it can be well worth it. Here are some tips to help ensure you’ll get the most out of every unpaid hour you put into your internship.

Look for perks. You may not be getting paid but that doesn’t mean your job shouldn’t come with any perks. Check with HR to see if you can get in on subsidized housing, help with commuting costs, free meals, or the use of company equipment. If your employer can’t help, see if your college offers an assistance programs for unpaid interns. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know, so don’t be afraid to take the first steps.

Network, network, network. Since you’re going to be working among people who are already in your field, take the opportunity to get to know as many of them as possible. They may be able to write you recommendations serve as references or even help you find a job after your internship. Remember, who you know can count as much as experience and education when it comes to finding work.

Ask questions. If there’s something you don’t know or want to know more about don’t just stay ignorant. Use your internship as a chance to really learn and expand your knowledge about the field. You might not be getting paid in money, but you can take away some valuable educational experiences instead.

Get college credit. A great many unpaid internship programs come with one big benefit: college credit for time spent working. Don’t miss out on the hours of credit you could be gaining– check with you adviser to see if there are programs in place that can help you work towards your degree while working away your summer at the same time.

Put your best foot forward. If you’re complaining, tired or disheveled at your internship position, you’re not making much of a case for your abilities as a future employee. Treat your position as you would a real job and always be highly professional. It could pay off when it comes time to find work.

Ideally, all internships would be paid positions, offering experience along with the financial support students need, but the reality is that more and more internships are unpaid positions. With some hard work and determination, you can turn your internship experience into a springboard to the career you want and an incredibly valuable asset to your resume. In time, you may come to see those unpaid hours as one of the best career investments you ever made.

True entry level jobs (those that require no experience) are getting harder and harder to find. And even if a job requires no experience, a candidate with experience is usually preferred over an inexperienced applicant. Even if you have the knowledge and skills to perform the duties listed on the job description, employers want experience because they don’t want to invest in training. A solution to this problem is to gain experience through an internship. Although some internships require experience (!), most don’t (yet). One of your key goals in college should be to get as much internship experience as you can before graduation.

Some great resources for finding internships:

Your College Career Center

The place to start when looking for an internship is your campus career center. Most career centers will have internship listings along with regular job listings. Your college may also offer formal internship programs that help students balance school work with internship responsibilities. Talk with a career counselor or career center staff member about your internship options.

Federal Government

The federal government offers internship opportunities, which can be found on the Student Jobs page at USA Jobs.gov. Government jobs are often overlooked by students, but they are great option to consider if you’re looking for security.

CDS International

For students interested in travel or working abroad, CDS International is a great resource for finding international internships. CDS international is a non-profit organization offering professional work internships, exchange programs, study tours, seminars, and cultural training. Find internships in Spain, Germany, Argentina, Switzerland, and the USA.

Intern Web

If you’re looking for a large selection of quality internships in a variety of locations, Intern Web is a site to visit. New internships are added daily, so be sure to search the site regularly or follow them on Twitter.

Urban Interns

Urban Interns connects businesses with internship- and part-time job-seekers. You can search for jobs by industry, skills, hours and/or city. Cities covered include New York, Boston, Chicago, and Washington, DC. You’ll find internships in performing arts, public relations, event planning, and many other industries. A perfect site for students and recent graduates.

Even as a new graduate, you’ll be expected to have experience. How is that possible, when balancing demanding course load? Get a summer internship (most large corporations offer summer internships), participate in a formal internship program at your university (these programs help schedule your classes around an internship), or take a semester off to participate in an internship. Not only will internships help you obtain relevant experience, but they may also help you decide if the career path you’ve chosen is right for you. The Intern Files: How to Get, Keep, and Make the Most of Your Internship

This is a guest post written by Elizabeth Cutten, a writer for FindCollegeCards, a college blog with over 750 articles all focusing on anything college.

Many college students out there have the assumption that an Internship is very easy to land. What a lot of students soon find out is that it’s no different than finding a job. Since major companies and corporations want quality talent, they are going to weed through Interns, just like they do their salaried employees.

So, the question is today, “How can I network effectively for an Internship?”

Be friendly with your professors

In college, what you’re going to find out is that a lot of your professors have worked a different career, or job sometime in their life. It doesn’t hurt to mingle with them every once in a while, and ask questions. Everyone on this planet has some sort of connection. Ask them about their previous works, and also ask if they know of anyone that can help you land an internship.

You can never have enough friends

Colleges are jammed packed with kids, and the more social able you are, the more you’ll get to know other people. If you ask a lot of people about their jobs today, you will find that they either found it through someone they knew, or they worked their way up from the bottom, whether it be an internship, or entry level position. It’s essential that you get out there, and chat with others. It sounds very cliché, but the more people you know, the more you’ll be able to connect in life.

Join groups online

I love the Internet, and with websites such as MeetUp.com, you can meet other people that share the same interests as you. Find a local meeting in your area, and join it. Every time they hold a meeting, show up, introduce yourself, and chat. Again, you’ll be surprised at how many people can help you with whatever you need.

Join chat rooms and forums

Just like joining groups in person, you can have virtual meetings online as well. Connect with other people in chat rooms, and message boards. Become a regular contributor, and you will soon find out that you can connect with people in both the virtual world, as well as the real world.

Surf the web

Again, with the Internet, it’s filled with endless information, and if you don’t feel you can connect with the right people, you can check internship related websites online. What you’ll want to do is search out “internship only” classifieds, and see if there’s anything made for you. Remember, a lot of the times, an unpaid internship leads to a job offer if you can prove to the employer that you know what you’re doing, and you know how to do it right.

The lesson learned here today is that if you want to network effectively, you’re going to want to be social able. The more outgoing you are, the more you’re going to increase your chances at landing a gig in the working world. Try some of these tips above, and see if you can land your dream internship.

One of the hardest things about finding a job is getting the experience most employers want. Internships are a great way to get that experience and, fortunately, there are sites that list only internships or entry-level positions.

Urban Interns – Probably the best internship site I’ve found. Urban Intern allows small business owners and professionals to find assistants and part-time staff. The only downside is that most of the positions are located in New York and Boston. Luckily, there are some listings in other areas in addition to virtual opportunities.

CollegeRecruiter – College Recruiter lists entry-level positions and internships. The internship listing is fairly extensive, with positions in a variety of fields. Many of the entry-level positions are not truly entry-level, but the site allows you search for internships only.

Internship Programs - This site allows candidates to search by field, location, date, or employer. All listings that I found were actual internships (as opposed to jobs) and were in a variety of locations.

InternshipIN – InternshipIn matches students and start-ups. My searches yielded a good selection of jobs in a variety of industries and locations. However, many of the listings link to other job boards, and some of them are not entry-level.

Finding an internship can be as difficult as finding a job, but there are websites that can help you focus your search. An internship is a great way to get experience and prove yourself to potential employers, so don’t overlook internships if you are a recent graduate or career-changer.
