For a lot of freshmen, adjusting to college life is hard. If you’re feeling lost or stressed, it doesn’t mean you don’t belong in college. In fact, many good students feel overwhelmed when entering college. In order to be happy and successful in college, you need to find ways to adapt to your new environment. Some advice for getting on the right track:

Cultivate Healthy Relationships

Relationships can be the key to success in college. Make connections with people that will uplift you and help you stay motivated. If you feel that you’re being brought down by a person or group of people, find new friends. One of the best ways to make and maintain good relationships is to be involved in various organizations, which leads to the next piece of advice.

Be Involved

No matter which college or university you attend, there’s probably at least one campus organization that fits your interests. You may want to be involved with a career-related group or lifestyle organization. This will not only force you to get out of your shell but also give you the opportunity to make friendships with like-minded students.

Get to Know Your Teachers

Teachers can be intimidating, especially at the college level. You may assume they’re too busy to talk to you or maybe you just don’t know how to approach them. Start by asking questions before or after class. Go to office hours if you’re having trouble. Establishing relationships with your teachers, especially those in your major, can be useful not only academically but for your career as well.

Make a Schedule

A schedule is essential for maintaining an organized life in college. Keep a schedule that includes classes, study times, meetings, projects, tests, and other important items. You may choose a physical planner or an electronic method of scheduling. Don’t forget to include free time for relaxing or having fun.

Have a Stress Outlet

A hobby or other past time can take your mind off problems and provide an outlet for stress. Consider active or creative activities, such as running or photography. Make sure you choose something you love and will do just for fun, not something that will create more stress.
